Earnings

Docs

A simple way to connect chores to allowance or other recognition.

What is the earnings feature?

Some households want to associate a dollar amount (or points) with certain tasks. When household members complete those tasks, the amounts add to their balance.

Parents or household managers can settle balances whenever it makes sense — weekly, monthly, or on request. What the balance means is up to you: cash, screen time, privileges, or something else entirely.

There are no leaderboards, badges, or streaks. Just a quiet ledger.

Enabling earnings

The earnings feature is off by default. To enable it:

  1. Open Settings in the app
  2. Go to Household Settings
  3. Enable Track earnings

Once enabled, you can assign amounts to tasks and designate which household members are eligible to earn.

Assigning amounts to tasks

When creating or editing a task, you can add an optional dollar amount. This amount is added to a member's balance when they complete the task.

To assign amounts to multiple tasks at once, use the Task earnings view in the app. This lets you see all your tasks in one place and quickly set or update amounts without editing each task individually.

Not every task needs an amount. Tasks without amounts work exactly as before — they just don't affect anyone's balance.

You can use any number that makes sense for your household. Some families use actual dollar amounts; others use points that convert to something else later.

Who can earn

Parents or household managers decide which members are eligible to earn. This is typically set up for children, but any member can be included.

Members who are not set up for earnings won't see balances or earning-related information — the feature stays out of the way.

How balances work

Each eligible member has a running balance that grows when they complete tasks that have amounts assigned.

Balances persist until a parent or manager settles them. There are no automatic resets, no expiration, and no penalties.

Members can see their own balance and a history of what they've earned.

Settling balances

Settling is how you honor earned balances. When you settle:

  • The member's balance resets to zero
  • A record of the settlement is created
  • You fulfill whatever the balance represents (allowance, privileges, etc.)

You can settle the full balance or a partial amount. Settle whenever it makes sense for your household — there's no required schedule.

Viewing earnings history

Parents and managers can view:

  • Current balances for all eligible members
  • Recent earnings activity
  • Settlement history

Eligible members can view their own balance and earning history.

Tips

  • Start simple. You don't need to assign amounts to every task.
  • Amounts can be changed anytime. Adjust as you learn what works.
  • Consider which tasks genuinely warrant earnings and which are just part of shared household responsibility.
  • Settling doesn't have to be on a fixed schedule. Do what fits your life.
